Mid-Century Modern ADU for Aging in Place

This 900-square-foot Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a custom-designed addition that combines mid-century modern style with practical, accessible living for the client’s elderly parents. Built by Axiom’s experienced general contracting team, this addition creates a highly functional and beautiful independent living space that seamlessly integrates connected into the client’s main home—supporting both privacy and daily interaction.

The ADU features an open floor plan that maximizes usable space, natural light, and movement. Large windows and folding glass doors open to views of a tranquil garden, enhancing indoor-outdoor living and creating a peaceful atmosphere ideal for aging in place. Thoughtful design elements—including a polished concrete floor, with radiant heat, zero-threshold entryways, a spacious barrier-free bathroom, and wide interior pathways—ensure accessibility without compromising on aesthetics.

Low-maintenance finishes, energy-efficient systems, and built-in storage make this addition easy to care for while preserving the sleek lines and organic warmth of the mid-century modern design. The ADU’s location on the same property as the main home allows for meaningful proximity to family, which holds deep cultural importance for the client.

As both a remodel and a new addition, this project demonstrates how smart design and a skilled general contracting team can create flexible, stylish living solutions that support multigenerational families. It serves as a model for homeowners looking to add an ADU that blends form, function, and family values.

Port Orchard DADU

Sited on a quiet stretch of beach along the Puget Sound, our client’s vacation home needed some extra space for family and guests to join in on fun summer activities. They turned to our design team to convert the high-peaked loft space above the garage into a cozy and airy dwelling space.

Ballard Backyard DADU

This charming Ballard DADU was a fun project for our Axiom Constructors team. The clients arrived with a fairly complete set of plans and permit from another design team, affording our project managers and field crew a great starting point. With some careful planning, budgeting, and minor design revisions the team was underway in good time and the result was a functional storage, home office, and guest space, which feels perfectly nestled behind its larger craftsman counterpart.
